The Garden of Earthly Delights

Pictured here is The Garden of Earthly Delights, an amazingly detailed triptych painted circa 1500. This is essential Bosch: a richly coloured, multi-setting masterpiece crowded by thousands of people, animals, and those in between.

On the outside of the panels is the creation of the world as seen from space. When opened up, the left side shows Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, accompanied by the anachronistic Christ. The centrepiece combines the beauty of creation with the carnal desires of humanity. Those activities result in the nightmarish tortures in Hell as seen in the right panel.
